John Cogan captures the beauty of creation on canvas, painting the landscapes and wildlife of the American West in a unique style that has become known throughout New Mexico and the Southwest.  He works in acrylic, focusing on color and the effects of light.
John earned a Bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University, an MA  and a Ph.D. in experimental physics from Rice University.  He worked briefly in the corporate world, but in 1982 he left his job to pursue painting full time.
The Grand Canyon has been one of John's favorite subjects and he has painted it hundreds of times in all seasons and weather over the last thirty years.  Participating

in the Grand Canyon Association's Plein Air on the Rim in 2009 as well as the Modern Masters show at Kolb Studio were honors that he does not take lightly.  He was again honored to participate in the 2010 and 2011 show, and at Zion National Park's "In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran" plein air invitational in 2010 and 2011.
Among John's public works is a 60 by 48-inch painting commissioned by San Juan College, AFTERNOON AT ECHO AMPHITHEATER for the Henderson Fine Arts Building.  John also has paintings in the in the permanent collections of Citizens Bank, Conoco Phillips, McGraw Hill and Raymond James Financial.
Over the last six years John has been commissioned to paint 24 landscapes for the Sultan of Oman.  He has worked from photos supplied by the Sultanate. Painting landscapes he has never scene presents unique challenges.  In this case, however, it was not too difficult.  John says the scenery reminds him  of New Mexico except, of course,  for the palm trees.
